Ultimately, the survivor cannot triumph; he cannot survive his own death, but there may be occasions where he comes close to it, then backs away. Regeneration is part of the survivor's nature as he rises from his own ashes each day. Rebirth is one of his favorite pastimes.

We all know people who, like cats, always find a good place for themselves, basking on the sunny side of every historic change. is a suspicious business. We know stories of widows who awaken to fresh loves over their husbands' graves.
Survival is a sign of health, the very quality at which we marvel in the cat and the oleander. To give up the game is to give in to death, to entertain oneself with disgust for existence, to assemble from this some sort of silvery romanticism.
